Morrison, Colorado

The very scenic Town of Morrison is situated at the bottom of beautiful Bear Creek Canyon in Jefferson County.  The town is named after George Morrison who settled in the area in 1859.  Morrison was a stonemason and quarried rock from the nearby red sandstone to build several structures--many of which survive today and are recognized as historic sites.  The town was incorporated in 1906.

According to City-Data.com, the 2019 population of Morrison was 424; the estimated median household income was $114,507; and the estimated median value of a single family home or condo was $628,192.

Undoubtedly the most famous feature of Morrison is Red Rocks Ampitheatre. In 1936, approval was given for the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) to begin building the ampitheatre.  Work was finalized in 1941.  The venue is used not only for amazing concerts, but is a also a favorite work out area, hosts graduations and Easter sunrise services, movies and even an annual 911 Remembrance stair climb for firefighters.  Many notable concerts have been held at Red Rocks--John Denver, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen--just to name a few.  And every genre has been represented there including classical, hard rock, Christian, Rock-n-Roll and more.

Dinosaur Ridge is directly opposite Red Rocks ampitheatre, just slightly northeast.  In 1877, stegosaurus remains were discovered in the area. Today dinosaur tracks can be viewed at Dinosaur Ridge on a guided bus tour or on a walking tour.  In 2006 Dinosaur Ridge was selected by the Denver Post as one of the “Top 10 Things to Do Before You Die.”

Just to the southeast of Red Rocks Ampitheatre is Bandimere Speedway, a quarter mile drag strip.  Bandimere hosts NHRA's (National Hot Rod Association) Mopar Mile-High Nationals.

Just 3 miles to the south of Red Rocks is The Fort Restaurant, known for new foods of the Old West, and modeled after Bent's Fort--an old Colorado fur trading fort built in 1833.  In addition to the amazing and creative menu, The Fort is available for private parties and special events.  It also home to the Tesoro Cultural Center and hosts many events aimed at keeping cultural events alive.

The small downtown area of Morrison is a delightful area with cute shops and eateries.  The Morrison Historic District was created in 1976 to preserve the historical area.  The Cliff House, the original home of George Morrison, can be rented as lodging or to host an event.
